A growing share of buyers shortlist before they search. They ask an assistant who the good options are and arrive already carrying three names. If you weren't one of them, your ranking never mattered.

As a Product Studio building for B2B companies, we track where those answers come from, for our own domain and our clients'. Some of it isn't what the industry says it should be.

What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)

Answer engine optimization is the work of becoming a source AI assistants cite, rather than a link someone clicks. The target isn't position one. It's being named inside the answer.

The unit of success changes, and so does the measurement. SEO is counted in rankings and sessions. A citation produces a mention and often no visit, because the assistant already summarised you. Your traffic can fall while your influence rises, and most analytics setups will report that as a bad quarter.

It doesn't replace SEO, it sits on top of it. Assistants answer by searching, reading results and synthesising them. If conventional search can't find you, you aren't in the pool being read.

AEO vs SEO: Key Differences

Same inputs, different scoring. Three differences matter most.

Rankings vs Citations

Position is no longer the prize; inclusion is. The seventh result gets cited while the first is ignored, because the seventh answered the question in its opening sentence and the first spent three paragraphs introducing itself.

Being cited is binary, and it's unstable. You are in the answer or you aren't, and the same prompt three days apart returns different sources. Treat a single check as a snapshot, never a result.

Keywords vs Questions and Entities

Nobody types "b2b fintech ux agency uk" into a chatbot. They write a sentence, usually with context about their own situation. Content shaped around real questions outperforms content shaped around search volume.

And the model needs to know what you are, not just what you rank for. An entity is a thing a system can identify and describe: what you do, for whom, where. If your homepage says you craft digital experiences that transform businesses, you have described nothing identifiable, and nothing identifiable is what gets repeated.

Consistency is part of the signal. Your site, LinkedIn and directory profiles should describe you the same way. Contradictory descriptions make you unsafe to assert.

Clicks vs Brand Mentions

A citation frequently produces no visit at all. The answer was complete. That is not a failure, it's the mechanism working, but it breaks every dashboard built on sessions.

Unlinked mentions count. A model reading a forum thread that names you is influenced by it whether or not anyone linked anywhere. This is the clearest break from link-based SEO: the asset is being talked about, not being linked to.

How AI Systems Choose Which Sources to Cite

Nobody outside the labs knows the ranking logic, and anyone selling certainty is selling something. What follows is what repeated testing shows, not documented mechanics.

A question becomes several searches. The assistant rewrites it into multiple queries, retrieves results, reads them and composes the answer from across them.

Pages that answer immediately get used. If the answer sits in paragraph nine, it often isn't extracted at all.

Corroboration beats authority. A claim repeated across independent sources is safer to state than the same claim made only by the company it flatters. Which is why your own website is rarely the deciding source.

User-generated content is over-represented. Forums, review platforms, directories and comparison lists carry weight out of proportion to their traffic, because they read as consensus rather than marketing. One of our own citations came from a subreddit with twenty-nine weekly visitors, in a thread with three upvotes, written by that subreddit's moderator, who ran one of the companies on the list.

How to Optimize Your Website for AI Answers

Four things in order of return.

Clear Answer Blocks and FAQ

Put the question in a heading and the answer in the sentence directly beneath it. Then elaborate. Highest-return formatting change available, and it costs nothing.

Make each answer self-contained. An extracted paragraph must make sense with no surrounding context, because that is how it will be read.

Structured Data and Company Entity

Run the copy-paste test first. Open your homepage, select all, copy, paste into a notes app. Under two hundred words means there is nothing to cite. Animated canvases, text baked into images and content that appears only after interaction are invisible.

Then state the entity in plain text, high on the page. One sentence: what you do, for whom, in which markets. In text, not in the hero animation.

Add structured data — Organization, FAQPage, Product, Article. It removes ambiguity about what the page is. It is not magic and it will not rescue a page with nothing on it.

Keep a machine-readable summary of your site where assistants can find it. The llms.txt convention exists for exactly this and takes an hour to implement.

Comparison Tables and Original Data

Tables get extracted more readily than prose, because the relationship between values is explicit. A genuine comparison of options in your category, with honest trade-offs, is some of the most citable content you can publish.

Original numbers are the strongest asset you have. Benchmarks from your own work, survey results, pricing ranges, timelines. A model repeating a statistic has to attribute it, and there is only one place to attribute yours.

Mentions on Third-Party Sites

Most of the work is here, and so is most of the discomfort. Reviews on the platforms your category uses, directory profiles kept current, comparison articles, podcast appearances with transcripts, and honest participation in forums your buyers read.

The line worth holding: ask real customers for real reviews, and take part as yourself. Fake reviews and self-listing schemes work until detection, and the downside is being filtered rather than cited.

How to Measure AI Visibility

Build a prompt set, not a keyword list. Ten to thirty questions a real buyer would ask, fixed so results stay comparable.

Run them on a schedule and record two things: whether you appeared, and which sources were cited. The second is more useful, because it tells you where the answer is assembled from.

Measure persistence, not presence. A mention surviving repeated runs over weeks is a position. One that appears once is noise, and reporting it as a win misleads everyone.

Track assistant referrals separately. Volume will be small, and those sessions behave nothing like search traffic, because the visitor arrives pre-qualified. Judge them by what they do, not how many there are.

Common AEO Mistakes

Treating it as a content volume problem. Twenty thin articles lose to one page with a number nobody else has.

Optimising only your own site. Your domain is rarely the deciding source. If every effort is on-site, you are working on the smaller half.

Fabricating the social proof. Invented reviews, seeded threads, subreddits built to list yourself. It is detectable, it is increasingly detected, and the penalty is exclusion.

Leaving the entity vague. If an assistant cannot say in one sentence what you are, it will not recommend you to someone who asked for exactly that.

AEO Checklist for B2B Companies

  • Write one plain sentence saying what you do, for whom, and put it in text near the top of your homepage.
  • Run the copy-paste test. Fix anything trapped in animation or images.
  • Convert key pages to question headings with the answer immediately beneath.
  • Add a real FAQ to the pages that sell, using questions from actual calls.
  • Add Organization, FAQPage and Article structured data, plus an llms.txt summary.
  • Publish one comparison table and one original data point per quarter.
  • Claim and update profiles on the review and directory platforms your category uses.
  • Ask clients for reviews when something visibly worked, not at project end.
  • Define a prompt set of ten to thirty buyer questions.
  • Run it weekly, record appearances and cited sources, and judge by persistence.
